Our Console Restoration Process | RetroReplay UK
Our Console Restoration Process
Every console we sell goes through a thorough restoration process before it's listed. Here's exactly what we do — step by step.
Step 1: Initial Assessment
When a console arrives, we power it on and run a full diagnostic check. We test every port, the disc drive, controller inputs, memory card slots, and AV output. We note any faults, cosmetic damage, and missing accessories before anything else is done.
Step 2: Full Disassembly
We strip the console down to its component parts. This gives us access to the internals for cleaning, inspection, and repair — and lets us assess the condition of every part individually.
Step 3: Deep Clean
Every part is cleaned thoroughly. Shells are washed, dried, and inspected for cracks or damage. Internal components are cleaned of dust, debris, and oxidation using appropriate tools and solutions. We pay particular attention to vents, fans, and heat sinks.
Step 4: Component Inspection & Repair
This is where the real work happens:
- Optical drive: Tested for read errors across multiple disc types. Laser potentiometers are adjusted where needed; lasers are replaced if they fail to meet our standard.
- Capacitors: Checked for bulging, leakage, or failure. Replaced where necessary — particularly important on older hardware like the PS1 and original Xbox.
- Thermal paste: Removed and replaced on the CPU and GPU. Fresh thermal paste significantly improves heat dissipation and long-term reliability.
- Fan: Cleaned and tested. Replaced if noisy or underperforming.
- Controller ports: Tested with multiple controllers. Cleaned and repaired where needed.
- Power supply: Tested under load. Replaced if output is outside safe tolerances.
Step 5: Cosmetic Restoration
Shells are assessed for yellowing, scratches, and cracks. Where possible, we retrobright yellowed shells to restore their original colour. Deep scratches are noted in the listing. We don't hide cosmetic issues — we photograph and describe them accurately.
Step 6: Reassembly
The console is reassembled using the correct screws and fixings. We don't use substitutes or leave screws out. Every panel and port cover is fitted correctly.
Step 7: Final Testing
Before listing, every console is powered on and tested again in its assembled state. We run it for a minimum of 30 minutes to check for thermal issues, disc read errors, and any intermittent faults. Only consoles that pass this final test are listed for sale.
Step 8: Photography & Listing
We photograph every console individually — including any cosmetic marks — and write an accurate description of its condition, included accessories, and any modifications. What you see in the listing is what you receive.
Optional Upgrades
After restoration, customers can request additional upgrades including FreeMCBoot installation, HDMI conversion, HDD fitting, and more. See our upgrade services.
Our Standard
We don't sell consoles we wouldn't be happy to own ourselves. If a unit doesn't meet our standard after restoration, it's either repaired further or parted out. We'd rather sell fewer consoles and maintain our reputation than ship something we're not proud of.
