Free McBoot (FMCB)
Overview
Free McBoot (FMCB) is a software exploit for the PlayStation 2 that installs a custom firmware environment onto a standard PS2 Memory Card. Once installed, the memory card can be used to boot homebrew applications — including Open PS2 Loader — on any compatible PS2 without requiring hardware modification or a modchip.
Key Features
- Runs entirely from a standard PS2 Memory Card
- No hardware modification required
- Launches homebrew applications including OPL, wLaunchELF and more
- Supports a customisable boot menu
- Compatible with the majority of PS2 hardware revisions
- Can be installed to multiple memory cards for sharing
Compatibility
FMCB is compatible with most PlayStation 2 fat and slim models. However, it is not compatible with the very latest PS2 slim hardware revisions (SCPH-9000x series). For those models, FreeHDBoot (FHDB) or a hardware modification is required.
How It Works
FMCB exploits a vulnerability in the PS2 boot process to load a custom menu from the memory card before the standard PS2 browser launches. From this menu, users can launch any ELF application stored on the memory card, USB drive, or HDD.
