The Console That Lost the War But Won the Library

The Sega Saturn launched in 1994 as Sega's 32-bit response to the coming PlayStation. Its dual-CPU architecture made it extraordinarily powerful for 2D gaming — but difficult to develop 3D games for. When Sony's PlayStation arrived with superior 3D performance and a lower price, the Saturn's fate was sealed in the West.

In Japan, however, the Saturn thrived. And its Japanese library — particularly its RPGs and shooters — is among the greatest ever assembled on any platform.

Iconic Games

  • Panzer Dragoon Saga — one of the rarest and most valuable games ever made
  • Radiant Silvergun — the shooter that defined a genre
  • Guardian Heroes — Treasure's beat-em-up masterpiece
  • Nights into Dreams — Sonic Team's dreamlike flight game
  • Virtua Fighter 2 — the fighting game that launched a franchise
  • Burning Rangers — Sonic Team's ambitious final Saturn game

Collector's Corner

The Saturn is one of the most collectible consoles in existence. Panzer Dragoon Saga regularly sells for over £500. Complete Japanese libraries are the holy grail of retro collecting. The console itself — particularly the white Japanese model — is a beautiful piece of hardware.
