Motion Controls Change Everything
When Nintendo revealed the Wii's motion controls, the gaming press was sceptical. When Wii Sports shipped with every console and grandparents started bowling in living rooms across the world, the sceptics went quiet.
The Wii outsold both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 — a remarkable achievement for a console a fraction of their technical power. Nintendo had correctly identified that the future of gaming wasn't more power — it was more people. The Wii brought gaming to demographics that had never engaged with it before.
Iconic Games
- Wii Sports — the game that sold a console and introduced millions to gaming
- The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess — a dark, epic Zelda adventure
- Super Mario Galaxy — arguably the greatest 3D Mario game ever made
- Mario Kart Wii — the best-selling Mario Kart of all time
- Metroid Prime 3: Corruption — motion controls used brilliantly
- Xenoblade Chronicles — a JRPG masterpiece that almost didn't reach the West
Beyond the Casual Reputation
The Wii's casual reputation obscures a genuinely deep library. Super Mario Galaxy, Xenoblade Chronicles, Metroid Prime 3, and Twilight Princess are among the finest games of their generation. The Wii deserves to be taken seriously as a gaming platform.
