The Leap Into Three Dimensions
When Nintendo launched the N64 in 1996, Super Mario 64 didn't just demonstrate 3D gaming — it defined it. Every 3D platformer made since owes a debt to Super Mario 64. Nintendo's decision to stick with cartridges over CDs was controversial, driving away Square and Final Fantasy VII to PlayStation, but it delivered faster load times and extraordinary durability.
Iconic Games
- Super Mario 64 — invented 3D platforming
- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time — widely considered the greatest game ever made
- GoldenEye 007 — defined console multiplayer gaming
- Super Smash Bros. — the original and still beloved
- Mario Kart 64 — four-player chaos that defined a generation
- Banjo-Kazooie — Rare's platformer masterpiece
- Majora's Mask — darker and more ambitious than Ocarina
Collector's Corner
The N64 is increasingly collectible, particularly boxed complete examples. Available in grey, Jungle Green, Ice Blue, and various limited editions — boxed variants command significant premiums.
