The Console That Challenged Atari

In 1979, Mattel — the toy company — launched the Intellivision as a direct challenge to Atari's dominance. It was technically superior in almost every way: better graphics, better sound, and a 16-direction disc controller that enabled more sophisticated gameplay than Atari's single-button joystick.

The Intellivision pioneered sports gaming with titles that featured real statistics and genuine strategic depth. NFL Football, NBA Basketball, and Major League Baseball were revelations — games that actually felt like the sports they represented.

Iconic Games

  • NFL Football — the first genuinely realistic sports game
  • Dungeons & Dragons: Cloudy Mountain — adventure gaming ahead of its time
  • Tron: Deadly Discs — the arcade tie-in that showcased the hardware
  • Utopia — one of the first real-time strategy games ever made

Collector's Corner

The Intellivision is a genuine collector's piece — particularly complete boxed examples with the original overlays and controllers. Its distinctive keypad controllers and disc controller are immediately recognisable and increasingly rare in good condition.
