FreeMcBoot: The Essential PS2 Homebrew Tool

FreeMcBoot (FMCB) is a free, open-source exploit for the PlayStation 2 that allows you to run homebrew software — including OPL (Open PS2 Loader) — directly from a memory card. It's the starting point for almost every PS2 HDD setup.

What Does FreeMcBoot Do?

  • Bypasses the PS2's boot restrictions to run unsigned software
  • Launches OPL so you can load games from an internal HDD or USB
  • Enables other homebrew apps like uLaunchELF, PS2 Browser, and more
  • Works on most PS2 FAT and Slim models (except very late slim models)

What You'll Need

  • A compatible PS2 memory card (8MB official or third-party)
  • A PS2 console (most models supported)
  • A PC with a memory card reader, or a pre-installed FMCB card

All RetroReplay UK HDD bundles come with FreeMcBoot pre-installed on a memory card — no setup required. Browse our PS2 HDD Bundles.

Compatible PS2 Models

FreeMcBoot works on the vast majority of PS2 consoles, including:

  • All PS2 FAT models (SCPH-10000 to SCPH-79000)
  • Most PS2 Slim models (SCPH-70000 to SCPH-77000)
  • Not compatible with very late slim models (SCPH-90000 series)

How to Install FreeMcBoot

  1. Download the FreeMcBoot installer from a trusted source
  2. Use a memory card manager or PS2 Save Builder to write the exploit to your memory card
  3. Insert the memory card into your PS2 and power on
  4. The FMCB menu will appear automatically on boot
  5. From the FMCB menu, launch OPL to access your HDD games

Using FreeMcBoot with OPL

Once FMCB is installed, simply insert your memory card every time you boot your PS2. The FMCB menu will load automatically, giving you access to OPL and your full game library. See our PS2 HDD Upgrade Guide for the full setup walkthrough.
