Fast help, clear steps.
Most issues are quick fixes. If you still need help, include your PS2 model (SCPH-xxxx), what you see on screen, and what you’ve tried.
Warranty & support
RetroReplay UK consoles and kits are tested before dispatch. If something isn’t right, support is available. The fastest support happens when you include the key details below.
- PS2 model: SCPH-____ (photo of label if possible)
- What you see on screen: ________
- Video setup: Composite / Component / HDMI upscaler + TV model
- What you’ve tried: different port/cable, reseat connections, reboot, etc.

Start here (triage)
1) Does the console power on?
Confirm power cable is fully seated and the front power button responds. If no power, try a different socket.
2) No display / black screen?
Most common causes are TV input/adapter mismatch.
- Confirm you’re on the correct TV input
- Try a different HDMI port (if using an upscaler)
- Reseat the AV/HDMI adapter and power cycle the TV
- If possible, test on a second TV/monitor
3) Picture is “awful” on a modern TV?
This is usually the cable/adapter/settings, not the PS2. See Modern TV picture for the fastest fix.
4) Exit a game back to the menu
Try: L1 + R1 + L2 + R2 + Start + Select together (depends on game/settings).
5) Game not launching / freezing?
If you’re on a modded/OPL setup, try a different compatibility mode and confirm the drive/connections are seated firmly. If it’s a disc issue, test a second disc.
6) Saving games when a memory card is used
You can save using memory card slot 2. If unsure, message support and you’ll be guided.
Modern TV picture quality (read this first)
PS2 outputs a low-resolution analogue signal. On modern 4K TVs, the adapter + TV scaling makes the biggest difference. “Bad graphics” is often normal when using cheap HDMI dongles or the wrong settings.
Best quick fix
Use a better video method and correct settings. For many TVs, Component (YPbPr) or a quality HDMI upscaler gives the biggest improvement. If you tell us your TV model, we can recommend settings.
What to send for diagnosis
Send photos of:
- PS2 Browser/menu screen
- One in-game scene (text/HUD visible)
- Your adapter/cable model and TV model
Important note
Some games are naturally softer/aliased on PS2. Upscalers improve presentation, not the game’s original resolution.
