From Failed Partnership to Industry Domination

The PlayStation's origin story is one of gaming's great ironies. Sony originally developed a CD-ROM add-on for the Super Nintendo — a partnership with Nintendo that collapsed spectacularly in 1991. Rather than walk away, Sony took their technology and built their own console. The result was the PlayStation — and it changed everything.

Sony entered a market dominated by Nintendo and Sega with no gaming pedigree and no established fanbase. Within five years, they owned it.

By the Numbers

  • 🏆 102.49 million units sold worldwide
  • 🎮 7,918 games released across its lifetime
  • 💿 First major console to use CD-ROMs as standard
  • 🌍 Launched in 29 countries within its first two years
  • ⏱️ 11 years of production — Sony kept making PS1s until 2006

Iconic Games That Defined the Era

  • Final Fantasy VII — the JRPG that introduced millions to the genre
  • Metal Gear Solid — cinematic storytelling that redefined what games could be
  • Resident Evil — survival horror born on PlayStation
  • Tekken 3 — the fighting game that perfected the formula
  • Crash Bandicoot — Sony's answer to Mario, and a genuine icon
  • Tony Hawk's Pro Skater — a cultural phenomenon that transcended gaming
  • Gran Turismo — the racing simulator that set the standard for a generation

The PSone: A Console Reborn

In 2000, Sony released the PSone — a dramatically smaller redesign of the original PlayStation. Compact, stylish, and compatible with every PS1 game, the PSone extended the console's life well into the PS2 era and introduced a new generation to the PlayStation library.

Why the PS1 Still Matters in 2026

The PS1 library contains some of the most important games ever made. Final Fantasy VII is still being remade. Metal Gear Solid is still studied. Resident Evil is still being rebooted. These aren't just nostalgic favourites — they're foundational works of interactive storytelling.

Playing them on original hardware, with the original loading times and controller, is an experience no remaster fully replicates.
