Too Little, Too Late

The Atari 7800 was actually completed in 1984 — but Atari's corporate turmoil delayed its wide release until 1986, by which point Nintendo had already established an insurmountable lead. The 7800 was technically capable, backward compatible with the entire 2600 library, and reasonably priced. It simply couldn't overcome Nintendo's stranglehold on retailers and third-party developers.

What Made It Special

  • 2600 backward compatibility — the entire Atari 2600 library playable on one machine
  • Improved graphics — significantly better than the 2600, competitive with the NES
  • Reasonable price — Atari's traditional strength in value
  • Pole Position II — a launch title that showcased the hardware's capabilities

Collector's Corner

The Atari 7800 is a genuine rarity in the UK, where it had limited distribution. Complete boxed examples are difficult to find. Its backward compatibility makes it a practical collector's choice — one console that plays two generations of Atari games.
